Azimala Beach

Azhimala Beach

Azhimala Beach is a breathtakingly beautiful coastal destination located near Vizhinjam in the Thiruvananthapuram district, where natural beauty perfectly blends with spirituality. The name 'Azhimala' is derived from two words: 'Azhi' (sea-mouth/estuary) and 'Mala' (hill). The unique landscape, featuring a combination of the sea, hills, and rocky formations, is a major attraction for tourists.

Major Attractions:

  • Gangadhareshwara Statue (Azhimala Shiva Temple): The biggest attraction here is the colossal 58-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva at the Azhimala Temple, facing the sea. It is one of the tallest Gangadhareshwara statues in India. Numerous devotees and tourists visit to witness this magnificent sculpture of Lord Shiva, depicted with Goddess Ganga in his matted hair, caressed by the sea breeze.

  • Beautiful Rock Formations: Distinct from other beaches, Azhimala is unique for its massive rocky formations that stretch right into the sea. Watching the waves crash against these rocks is a spectacular sight (though climbing on these rocks is dangerous).

  • Sunset: Set against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea, the sun setting behind the majestic Shiva statue offers a perfect canvas for photography.

  • Tranquility and Natural Beauty: Since the area is not heavily commercialized, it retains its pristine coastal charm and serene atmosphere.

How to Reach: Azhimala is located about 20 km away from Thiruvananthapuram city and 7 km from the famous Kovalam Beach. It can be easily reached via the Vizhinjam–Poovar Road.
